Keep Up With My Latest Work
The Starving man
Acrylic on Canvas
I always like my work to be based on reality and from personal experiences. The Starving Man in Acrylic Paint is a prime example of my inspiration to stay relevant and innovative. The inspiration came from an evening spent at a restaurant with my husband in the Northern quarter of Manchester. He and I enjoyed a hot meal along with other diners whilst a man sat across the street in the freezing cold. The most saddening part of this painting is that this scene is a typical evening on the streets of Manchester.
Headfuckery
Acrylic/ink on canvas
This painting is of my dear friend Denise. This painting is the visual form to her blog called 'Headfuckery'. It was personally important me that i interpreted her heartfelt written words in a way that showed her inner strength. The tower on the cage is that of Truro cathedral, which she could see through her room window during rehabilitation. The robin body is a symbol of hope and in particular because a robin visited her daily when she came out of rehab. The dress is her lucky dress that she wears when she is trying new and brave ventures. Denises stories give hope and encouragement to others. She is also my guest conversationalist in ‘Are You Sitting Comfortably’ speaking about her experiences of homelessness to the public. She has also collaborated with illustrator Julia Dosad and singer/producers Kim & Ricky Wilde to create an amazing account of her life in the form of a cartoon which is in know way suitable for children because of its dark complexity.
Self Portrait
This painting is my self portrait. I have always avoided mirrors as I believed it was vain. I now fit more comfortably into my own skin and have spent time exploring the importance of self acceptance and self love. I painted this and have it in a prominent place in my home. This version of me is strong and positive. It helps to look myself in the eye occasionally.
The Manchester Raven
The Manchester Raven was inspired by a poem written by a friend of mine and poet Jez Green. In his poem he talks about how it feels to have the condition M.E. This piece is created by hand with clay and plaster of paris to create a 3d texture. Acrylic is used to highlight the necessary poits. The poem has painted left on the brown cardboard to imitate the Manchester street poem style which Jez has been heavily involved in.
